BOLAVEN PLATEAU COFFEE Nicknamed the "Fountain of Lao coffee", the Bolaven Plateau enjoys unique geoclimatic conditions in the world, which have allowed it to produce exceptional high altitude coffees for more than a century, wet processed and certified as fair trade and organic since 2009. The partnership between Malongo and small local producers has allowed them to enhance their product. The cooperative brings together more than 1,800 producer families from 55 towns. These coffee growers control the entire process of making their coffee. To fight against falling prices, small producers have formed cooperatives. The cooperative from which this coffee comes was created in 2000, after Hurricane Mitch. Today it has 170 members and has become a model for other cooperatives in the country. ORGANIC AND FAIR TRADE COFFEE FROM PERU Malongo imports coffee from various cooperatives, especially Alto Mayo and Sol y Café. The first has 943 producers who harvest cherries in 43 production areas. The latter has 1,122 members, some of whom regularly rank among the best in quality competitions organized nationally and abroad. The farms are located mainly in mountainous areas, in the shade of the forest, where coffee trees grow alongside banana trees. Today, the country is one of the main players in the export of fair trade coffee. COFFEE BEANS GROWN IN THE HEART OF THE GUATEMALAN MOUNTAINS Maya Ixil, a prestigious Arabica bean bequeathed by the Mayan Indians of the Guatemalan Altiplano, is grown at high altitudes on very small plantations. The planters use compost made from fruit pulp and manure and weed by hand. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. Despite this, they achieve very good productivity. In democratically organized committees, the members themselves decide the future of their cooperative. Fair trade premiums have been effective in combating coffee rust, which had destroyed much of the crop. Colombia, like all production areas located on the equator, has two harvests a year: the big one, from October to February, and the small one, in May and June. MOKA ETHIOPIA COFFEE BEANS Ethiopia produces exceptional coffee that is grown on small farms in the Sidamo region. This coffee, which is traditionally grown and picked by hand, is part of the local culture and is the subject of a ceremony that can last two hours. The coffee orchard, an agroforestry system that mixes large trees, (often) banana, coffee, and annuals, is widespread in this region.
